Martin Henry Stutters was born in Chevington on 18th March 1897 (Thingoe Q2-1897 4A:783), baptised All Saints, Chevington on 29th June 1897, son of Walter and Susan STUTTERS (née EVERED).


1901 census...Aged 4, he was at Stone Cottages, Chevington with his father Walter STUTTERS [42] farm labourer born Whepstead; his mother Susan [43] born Hartest; brothers William [19] threshing machine labourer, born Horringer, George [14] farm labourer born Boxted and John [9] born Cavendish; sisters Mary Ann [11] born Cavendish and Emily R [6] born Chevington.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was at Sapiston with his widower father; brother George (farm labourer); sister Mary and nephew George STUTTERS [10 months] born Thetford.



Enlisted in Bury St Edmunds.
The battalion diary says on the 3rd they moved to F.20.a (apparently near Rocquigny) via MONTAUBAN and went into camp there. On the 4th the battalion rested all day Off.25 OR 725 Rejoined 1. They went into action at Delville Wood the next day
CWGC records 2 deaths in the battalion on the 4th.



Martin Stutters is commemorated on the Thiepval memorial, pier and face 5D/6D.
